Key context

US, UK and Canada: where they agree and differ

We compared the 209 countries that all three governments cover, on one 1-to-4 scale (UK: 4 = against all travel, 3 = against all but essential travel, 2 = advice against travel to parts; Canada: its four risk levels). All three advise against all travel to the whole of Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Iran, Mali, Niger, Russia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The US is stricter than both the UK and Canada for 27 countries, for example Chad (US Level 4), Uganda (US Level 4), Azerbaijan (US Level 3), Colombia (US Level 3), Guatemala (US Level 3) and Guinea-Bissau (US Level 3). The UK or Canada is stricter than the US for 12, for example Cabo Verde, Cuba, El Salvador, Eritrea, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan. A different level is not an error: each government weighs risks for its own citizens and its own consular reach.

Official travel advice

Questions and answers

What are the 4 travel advisory levels?
The US State Department uses four levels. Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions. Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Level 3: Reconsider Travel. Level 4: Do Not Travel. Today 88 countries are at Level 1, 82 at Level 2, 27 at Level 3 and 24 at Level 4. A country can also have stricter levels for some regions; the official advisory lists them.
Which countries are Level 4: Do Not Travel right now?
As of 15:16 UTC 29 Oct: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burma (Myanmar), Central African Republic, Chad, DR Congo, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Niger, North Korea, Palestinian territories, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Uganda, Ukraine and Yemen. See the Do Not Travel list for the reasons and dates of each advisory.
Is there an official State Department travel advisory map?
Yes: the State Department publishes an interactive map at travelmaps.state.gov. This page uses the same official levels and adds the UK and Canada advice for each country, the recent changes, and links to each official page.
How often are US travel advisories updated?
The State Department says it reviews Level 1 and 2 advisories at least every 12 months and Level 3 and 4 advisories at least every 6 months, and it updates an advisory at any time when the situation changes. This page checks the official feed every 30 minutes. The date in the table is the date of the latest published version.
Why do the US, UK and Canada give different advice for the same country?
Each government sets its own levels, for its own citizens, with its own scales: the US uses Levels 1 to 4, Canada uses four risk levels, and the UK only says where it advises against all travel or all but essential travel. They often agree on the most dangerous places: today all three advise against all travel to Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Iran, Mali, Niger, Russia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
Does travel insurance cover a Level 4 country?
Often not. Many policies exclude places where your government advises against travel, and the UK government warns that travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice. Check your policy before you book.
Is this the Indiana county travel advisory map?
No. This page covers travel abroad. For road travel levels in Indiana counties (advisory, watch and warning), use the Indiana Department of Homeland Security county travel status map.
