How we count wars

We use the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), the most widely cited academic source on armed conflict. Its candidate events are preliminary, georeferenced events published monthly, so the map shows the last complete month, not the last hour. The media reports list fills the gap with today's news, labelled as media reports.

Fatality figures are UCDP's own best, low and high estimates, reported by UCDP with the event date. We never add UCDP numbers to numbers from other sources, because the methods differ. Disputed areas are named neutrally, after the country UCDP assigns the event to.

In the current window the UCDP best estimates add up to 13,335 deaths across all countries. Real totals are higher: many events are never reported.

Questions and answers

What wars are going on right now?
The largest by reported deaths in the latest UCDP data are Ukraine, Yemen, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria. The table above lists every country with recorded events, and the media reports show what happened today.
Which countries are at war right now?
In the latest UCDP candidate data (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026) the countries with the most reported conflict deaths were Ukraine, Yemen, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan, Mexico, Colombia. The full table above lists all 44 countries with at least one recorded event. UCDP counts state-based conflict, fighting between non-state groups and violence against civilians.
Which wars is the US in?
MonitorWorld does not classify US involvement itself. US forces carry out operations abroad under congressional authorizations, such as the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force, and under presidential authority. For current US military operations, see the dated media reports on this page and statements from the US Department of Defense.
Is the US officially at war?
Formally, no. The US Congress last declared war in June 1942, during World War II. Since then US forces have fought under authorizations for the use of military force, UN mandates or presidential authority, without a formal declaration of war.
How many wars are there in the world?
It depends on the definition. UCDP calls a conflict a "war" when it causes at least 1,000 battle-related deaths in a year, and an "armed conflict" from 25 deaths. In its June 2025 report, UCDP/PRIO counted 61 state-based armed conflicts in 2024, the highest number since 1946, and 11 of them reached the level of war. In the current UCDP candidate window, 27 countries passed 25 reported deaths.
