Key context
How to read this page
Each dot is one earthquake from the USGS real-time feed. The colour and size follow the magnitude: LOW is M2.5 to M4.9, MED is M5.0 to M5.9, HIGH is M6.0 to M6.9 and CRIT is M7.0 or a red USGS PAGER alert. The label is always in text, so the colours are never the only signal.
Magnitude is logarithmic. A M6.0 releases about 32 times more energy than a M5.0, and about 1,000 times more than a M4.0. Depth matters too: a shallow M6 under a city usually does more damage than a deep M7 far offshore.
What the tsunami flag means
USGS sets a tsunami flag on large quakes in oceanic regions. The flag is not a tsunami warning. Real warnings come from the tsunami warning centers, listed at tsunami.gov, and from your national authority. No quake in the past 24 hours carried the flag.

Why counts change during the day
USGS reviews automatic solutions. A quake can first appear with one magnitude and be revised a few minutes later, and duplicates from different networks are merged. The numbers on this page are rebuilt every 10 minutes from the feed, so they can differ slightly from the USGS map at any given second.
