Why Iran and Israel are in conflict

Iran and Israel have been enemies since the 1979 revolution. Israel sees Iran's nuclear programme and its network of allied armed groups (Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, militias in Iraq and Syria) as a threat to its existence; Iran's leaders reject Israel's existence and call their network the "axis of resistance".

For decades the conflict was mostly indirect: sabotage, assassinations and proxy wars. In April and October 2024 the two states struck each other directly for the first time. In June 2025 Israel launched a large air campaign against Iran's nuclear and military sites (from 13 June), Iran answered with missile barrages, and the US struck the Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites on 22 June before a ceasefire on 24 June. Eight months later a much larger war began, described below.

The 2026 Iran war: what happened

As of October 2026 there is no ceasefire in force. Fighting continues at a lower level than in the spring, the Strait of Hormuz is still restricted, and mediators, among them Qatar, are trying to restart talks; the US denies that peace talks are under way (reported by Al Jazeera, 29 October 2026). The status changes fast, so check the dated reports at the top of this page.

Iran's geography and why it matters

Iran has about 90 million people and borders Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Its southern coast faces the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, the route for about a fifth of the world's oil in normal times. It is also one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, so strong quakes are shown on this map too.

For shipping risk, see the Strait of Hormuz map (status red today).

Our safety rules for this page

We never plot military aircraft over Iran or other active war zones. Casualty numbers are UCDP estimates, reported by UCDP with dates; we do not add them to figures from other sources. Headlines are media reports, not confirmed facts.

Questions and answers

What is happening in Iran right now?
The latest report on this page (08:36 UTC, Al Jazeera) is: "Oil flows are up as Iran war turmoil eases. Why do prices keep rising?". UCDP recorded 4 conflict events in Iran between 5 Nov 2025 to 31 Dec 2025. Read several sources before you draw conclusions.
Is Iran under attack?
Check the dated media reports at the top of this page; they update every 10 to 15 minutes. In the latest UCDP data, 4 events inside Iran were recorded, with 4 deaths reported by UCDP. UCDP data is monthly, so the most recent days only show up in the news reports.
Why are Iran and Israel fighting?
The conflict goes back to the 1979 revolution. Israel sees Iran's nuclear programme and its allied armed groups as an existential threat; Iran opposes Israel and supports groups that fight it. Since 2024 the two states have also struck each other directly: a 12-day air war in June 2025, and a much larger war that the US and Israel began on 28 February 2026.
Is there a ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran?
Not as of late October 2026. A US-Iran ceasefire agreed on 8 April 2026 with Pakistani mediation ended in July 2026, when President Trump said it was over after clashes at the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar and other mediators are trying to restart talks (reported by Al Jazeera, 29 October 2026). Check the dated reports at the top of this page.
Who is more powerful, Iran or Israel?
They are strong in different ways. Israel has a more advanced air force, layered missile defences (Iron Dome, David's Sling, Arrow), close US backing and is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, which it does not confirm. Iran has a much larger population and army, and one of the largest ballistic-missile and drone arsenals in the region, but older aircraft. Distance limits what each side can do without allies.
Is the Strait of Hormuz closed?
Not fully closed, but heavily restricted since the 2026 war began: the EIA estimates that oil flows through the strait fell from about 21 million barrels per day in 2025 to 4.9 million in the second quarter of 2026, and as of October 2026 traffic is still far below normal. Our chokepoint model rates the Strait of Hormuz RED (score 70/100) today. See the Strait of Hormuz map and the official UKMTO advisories for the shipping situation.
