Data sources and method
Every number on monitorworld.app comes from a named public source or from one of our own models, and every page says which. This page lists the providers, the licence and credit for each, and the rules we follow before we publish anything.
Sources on this website
- USGS Earthquake Hazards Program: Earthquakes: real-time GeoJSON feeds (magnitude, depth, PAGER alert, tsunami flag). Public domain. Credit: U.S. Geological Survey.
- adsb.lol: Military aircraft positions from a community ADS-B receiver network. Open Database License (ODbL 1.0). Credit: adsb.lol contributors. Shown at least 20 minutes delayed.
- UCDP Candidate Events Dataset: Georeferenced armed-conflict events with best, low and high fatality estimates. CC BY 4.0. Credit: Uppsala Conflict Data Program. Candidate (preliminary) data, published monthly; we label it "events to
". - The GDELT Project: Media reports per topic from the GDELT DOC 2.0 API. Free and open. Cited as GDELT, labelled "media reports"; MonitorWorld does not verify the articles.
- USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker: Weekly public summary of US Navy ship locations. Copyright USNI News. We restate facts in our own words and link to the original.
- U.S. Energy Information Administration: Oil flow and bypass figures for shipping chokepoints. Public domain (US government).
- Natural Earth: Country and coastline shapes for our maps (via the world-atlas package). Public domain.
Our own models
- Risk index: a 0-100 score per country and a global score, computed from news activity, conflict data and military activity. It is an estimate, not an official rating.
- Chokepoint status: green, yellow or red plus a 0-100 disruption score for 13 sea lanes, from a threat baseline, navigational warnings and AIS disruption signals. A risk rating, not an official notice.
- Severity labels: CRIT, HIGH, MED and LOW on every event. For earthquakes they follow magnitude and the USGS PAGER level; for conflict events they follow reported deaths; for news they come from our classifier.

- Public news feeds: Headlines from Reuters, AP, BBC, Al Jazeera, DW, France 24 and other public feeds. Each headline links to its publisher. We show the headline, never the full article.
Rules we follow
- Military aircraft are published at least 20 minutes after the position was received, always with a "last seen" time.
- No aircraft is plotted inside or near active war zones: Ukraine, Russia west of 45°E, Israel, Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
- VIP and state aircraft (for example Air Force One and SAM / EXEC callsigns) are never shown.
- Casualty figures are always given as "reported by <source>, <date>". UCDP figures show best, low and high estimates, and we never add numbers from different sources together.
- DEFCON levels are not public. We do not show, estimate or guess them.
- Disputed areas get neutral names, following the country the source assigns them to.
- Media reports are labelled as media reports. A headline is not a confirmed fact.
Update times
The live pages are rebuilt every 10 minutes and cached for up to 10 minutes. Each page shows an "Updated HH:MM UTC" line and the as-of time of each number.
