How we count protests
Official alerts come from the alert pages of about 170 US embassy and consulate websites. Embassies post a demonstration alert when they expect protests that could affect US citizens, often a day or more ahead, so these alerts are also the best guide to protests tomorrow and this weekend. Many countries have no alert even on busy protest days.
Protest news counts the places that news articles about protests named in the past 7 days (GDELT). A count measures coverage, not crowd size: a capital with many foreign reporters gets more mentions than a large rally in a small town. We snap every place to its city, state or country and never show streets, squares or crowd positions.
How to stay safe near a protest
- Stay away from demonstrations if you can, even peaceful ones: crowds can turn confrontational quickly, and police may use tear gas or close roads and transport without warning.
- If you are caught near one, move away calmly to a side street or a building, keep your phone charged and know two routes back to where you stay.
- Follow instructions from the police and local authorities, and check local news and official accounts for road closures and curfews.
- In some countries taking part in a protest, or even filming one, is illegal for foreigners and can lead to arrest or deportation.
- US citizens abroad can enrol in STEP to get embassy alerts; UK and Canadian travellers can sign up for alerts on GOV.UK and travel.gc.ca.
