Key context
How this page works
The page holds two lists: every US embassy demonstration alert of the past 30 days, placed at the city it names (or the capital when no city is named), and the cities and states most named in protest news this week. When you tap the button or search a place, your browser measures the distance to each one and shows the closest. MonitorWorld never receives your position.
The city and ZIP search uses an offline list of about 8,000 cities and US ZIP code areas from GeoNames. A ZIP code is matched to the centre of its area, which is precise enough for a radius of a few tens of kilometres.
How to stay safe near a protest
- Stay away from demonstrations if you can, even peaceful ones: crowds can turn confrontational quickly, and police may use tear gas or close roads and transport without warning.
- If you are caught near one, move away calmly to a side street or a building, keep your phone charged and know two routes back to where you stay.
- Follow instructions from the police and local authorities, and check local news and official accounts for road closures and curfews.
- In some countries taking part in a protest, or even filming one, is illegal for foreigners and can lead to arrest or deportation.
- US citizens abroad can enrol in STEP to get embassy alerts; UK and Canadian travellers can sign up for alerts on GOV.UK and travel.gc.ca.
