By our live risk index, Ukraine ranks first today (60/100), followed by Yemen, Myanmar (Burma), Syria. Rankings that measure crime or long-term peace, such as the Global Peace Index, can order countries differently.
What are the most dangerous countries to visit?
Countries at war or with collapsed security, such as those at the top of this list, carry the highest risk. For travel decisions, read your government's official advice: the US State Department's travel advisories (levels 1 to 4) and the UK Foreign Office travel advice are the most used.
What are the safest countries in the world?
Iceland has topped the Global Peace Index every year since 2008; Ireland, Austria, New Zealand and Switzerland are usually near the top. Our index focuses on conflict and military risk, so countries without active conflicts score low.
How is this ranking made?
Each country's score (0-100) combines a baseline for long-running instability with live signals: news activity, conflict events and military activity. It updates every 10 to 20 minutes. Deaths shown next to each country are UCDP estimates for its latest window, reported by UCDP.
