Key context

Why the strait matters

The Strait of Hormuz links the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the open ocean. It is about 21 miles (33 km) wide at its narrowest point, and ships use two inbound and outbound lanes, each about 2 miles wide, inside the territorial waters of Iran and Oman.

According to the EIA, about 20 million barrels of oil per day flowed through the strait in 2024, roughly 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption. Most of it goes to Asia: China, India, Japan and South Korea are the largest buyers. About a fifth of the world's LNG trade, mainly from Qatar, also passes here.

What our status means

Our model combines a threat baseline for the area, active navigational warnings (0 now) and AIS disruption signals into a 0-100 score. Today's main driver: Active conflict: Iran-Israel war. Routes affected: Gulf Oil Exports, Qatar LNG, Iran Exports.

Treat the rating as a risk indicator. It can stay red for weeks in a tense period even while ships keep moving, and it can lag a sudden event by up to 30 minutes.

Questions and answers

Is the Strait of Hormuz open?
As of 08:31 UTC our chokepoint model rates it RED (high disruption risk), score 70/100. MonitorWorld does not decide whether the strait is open. Shipping status is set by navies, coastal states and insurers; the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) publish the official advisories. Read the dated media reports above for the latest situation.
Is the Strait of Hormuz closed right now?
Check the date and time on each media report above and the UKMTO advisories. A closure would show up as a stop in tanker traffic, official notices and war-risk insurance changes, not only as headlines. Our risk rating measures the risk of disruption; it is not a notice that the strait is closed.
Can the Strait of Hormuz be bypassed?
Only partly. Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline can move crude to Yanbu on the Red Sea, and the UAE's Habshan-Fujairah pipeline reaches the Gulf of Oman. The US Energy Information Administration estimates that about 2.6 million barrels per day of unused pipeline capacity could bypass the strait, a small part of the roughly 20 million barrels per day that normally pass it. Qatar's LNG exports have no bypass.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?
It is the only sea route out of the Gulf. In 2024 about 20 million barrels of oil per day passed through it, about 20% of world petroleum liquids consumption, plus about a fifth of global LNG trade, mostly from Qatar (EIA). Any disruption raises oil and gas prices worldwide within hours.
How many ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz per day?
MonitorWorld does not publish a verified daily transit count yet. Vessel-tracking firms publish daily counts; in normal times traffic is dominated by large crude and product tankers and LNG carriers. For scale, the EIA figure of about 20 million barrels of oil per day in 2024 equals roughly ten very large crude carriers' worth of oil every day.
