Key context

How this page works

When you tap the button, your browser asks whether to share your location. If you agree, the page downloads the list of every M2.5+ quake USGS recorded in the past 30 days (about 2,000 quakes), measures the distance from you to each one and shows the nearest 15. The calculation runs on your device; MonitorWorld never receives your position.

The city and ZIP search uses an offline list of about 8,000 cities and US ZIP code areas from GeoNames. A US ZIP code is matched to the centre of its area, which is precise to a few tens of kilometres: close enough to find nearby quakes.

Earthquakes by region

What to do if you feel a quake

If you feel shaking: Drop, Cover and Hold On until it stops. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture, and do not run outside during the shaking. On a coast, strong or long shaking is a natural tsunami warning: move to high ground or inland at once, on foot if you can. Then follow your local officials; this page is not a warning service.

Questions and answers

Was there an earthquake near me just now?
Tap "Use my location" above: the page sorts every M2.5+ quake of the past 30 days by distance from you and shows how many hit within 100, 250 and 500 km. USGS listed 44 quakes of M2.5+ worldwide in the past 24 hours (as of 10:37 UTC). For quakes under M2.5, check your national seismic network.
Does this page track or store my location?
No. Your browser asks for permission, the position stays on your device, and the page compares it with a quake list it downloads. Nothing is sent to MonitorWorld or stored, and the page uses no cookies for this. The city and ZIP search uses an offline list, also inside your browser.
Why can't I find a small quake I felt?
This page lists M2.5 and larger. Outside the US, USGS often lists quakes only from about M4. Your national network (for example JMA in Japan, PHIVOLCS in the Philippines, AFAD in Turkey or NCS in India) usually lists smaller local quakes, often faster. You can also report what you felt to USGS "Did You Feel It?".
How far away can you feel an earthquake?
It depends on magnitude, depth and the ground. A shallow M3 is usually felt only within a few tens of kilometres; a M5 can be felt 100-200 km away; a M7 or larger can be felt several hundred kilometres away, and very deep quakes are felt over wide areas. Soft soils and tall buildings make shaking feel stronger.
Can I get an alert when a quake hits near me?
Yes. The MonitorWorld app sends a push alert when a quake passes the magnitude you choose within a radius of your home or the places you follow. In parts of the US West Coast, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan and other countries, official early-warning systems also send alerts to phones.
