The 2026 season in numbers
Atlantic: 10 named storms, 1 hurricane and 1 major hurricane so far; the strongest was Isaias, with peak winds of 105 kt (120 mph, 195 km/h) (Category 3). An average season (1991-2020) has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes, so 2026 is below the average count with 33 days of the season left.
East and Central Pacific: 24 named storms, 13 hurricanes and 11 major hurricanes; the strongest was Polo at 155 kt (180 mph, 285 km/h). The East Pacific average (1991-2020) is 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes, so the Pacific count is above its average. Counts come from NHC's operational best-track files and can change slightly in the final post-season review.
Storm energy tells the same story. NHC's season summary put the Atlantic's accumulated cyclone energy (ACE, a measure of how strong storms were and for how long) at 19.5 on 29 October 2026, 83% below the 1991-2020 normal, while the East Pacific stood at 247.3, 132% above normal (NHC).
Notable hurricanes of 2025 and 2026
- Hurricane Isaias (9 Oct 2026, Category 2 at landfall; peak 105 kt (Category 3)): the only Atlantic hurricane of 2026 as of 29 October; made landfall near Destin, Florida, with 105 mph winds; NWS Tallahassee reported no deaths in its area (NWS Tallahassee; NHC).
- Hurricane Polo (29 Sep 2026, Category 2 at landfall; peak 155 kt): made landfall just south of Las Barrancas, Baja California Sur, then again east of Guaymas, Sonora, as a Category 1 (NHC advisories 34A and 36A).
- Hurricane Melissa (28 Oct 2025, Category 5, 160 kt (185 mph) at landfall): made landfall near New Hope, Jamaica: the strongest landfall on record in Jamaica and tied for the strongest Atlantic landfall by wind; 93 deaths reported by NHC (45 in Jamaica, 43 in Haiti), report revised 19 May 2026 (NHC Tropical Cyclone Report).
Hurricane categories (Saffir-Simpson scale)
The category is based only on the maximum sustained wind. It does not include storm surge, rain or the size of the storm, which often cause most of the deaths and damage.
| Category | Wind (kt) | Wind (mph) | Wind (km/h) | Typical damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tropical depression | under 34 | under 39 | under 63 | rain and flooding |
| Tropical storm | 34-63 | 39-73 | 63-118 | named storm; flooding, some wind damage |
| Category 1 | 64-82 | 74-95 | 119-153 | damage to roofs and trees, power cuts |
| Category 2 | 83-95 | 96-110 | 154-177 | extensive damage, near-total power loss |
| Category 3 (major) | 96-112 | 111-129 | 178-208 | devastating damage |
| Category 4 (major) | 113-136 | 130-156 | 209-251 | catastrophic damage |
| Category 5 (major) | 137 or more | 157 or more | 252 or more | catastrophic; area uninhabitable for weeks |
How to read the cone and the tracks
- White area: the NHC forecast cone. NHC builds it from circles that hold about two-thirds of its forecast errors of the past five years, so the centre leaves the cone about one time in three.
- Dashed cyan line and small dots: the forecast positions of the centre, with the forecast wind at each point. Tap a dot for the time and wind.
- White line: the past track of the storm. Grey lines: every other storm of this season, from the best-track files.
- Impacts reach far outside the cone. Storm surge and flooding rain kill more people than wind. Follow the watches and warnings of your national weather service.
Hurricane, typhoon or cyclone: the same storm
All three are tropical cyclones: rotating storms that form over warm ocean water. Only the name changes with the ocean. Over the North Atlantic and the Northeast Pacific, a storm with sustained winds of 64 kt (74 mph) or more is a hurricane. Over the Northwest Pacific it is a typhoon. Over the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific it is a cyclone (in Australia, a tropical cyclone of any strength).
