Cyclone strength scales

The same cyclone gets different labels in different places, because each centre averages the wind over a different time. This page shows JTWC's 1-minute winds in kt for every storm, so storms in all oceans compare directly.

Australian cyclone categories

The Bureau of Meteorology rates cyclones from Category 1 to 5 by the strongest gusts: Category 1 below 125 km/h, Category 2 125-164 km/h, Category 3 165-224 km/h, Category 4 225-279 km/h and Category 5 above 280 km/h. Categories 3 to 5 are "severe tropical cyclones". An Australian Category 3 is not the same as a Category 3 hurricane.

Hurricane, typhoon or cyclone: the same storm

All three are tropical cyclones: rotating storms that form over warm ocean water. Only the name changes with the ocean. Over the North Atlantic and the Northeast Pacific, a storm with sustained winds of 64 kt (74 mph) or more is a hurricane. Over the Northwest Pacific it is a typhoon. Over the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific it is a cyclone (in Australia, a tropical cyclone of any strength).

Official cyclone information

Questions and answers

Is there a cyclone right now?
No. As of 13:43 UTC, JTWC has no active tropical cyclone in the North Indian Ocean or the Southern Hemisphere. The last North Indian Ocean cyclone was Cyclone Arnab (28 Oct 2026).
When is cyclone season in India?
The North Indian Ocean has no fixed season. Cyclones form mostly in two periods: April to June, before the monsoon, and October to December, after it. The Bay of Bengal gets about four times as many cyclones as the Arabian Sea. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues the official warnings.
When is cyclone season in Australia?
The Australian tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April (Bureau of Meteorology). The South Pacific season (Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga) has the same dates, and the South-West Indian Ocean season (Madagascar, Mozambique, Mauritius, La Reunion) runs from 15 November to 30 April. Today the Australian region is off season, next season starts 1 Nov (in 3 days).
Why does IMD or BoM give a different strength?
Each centre uses its own wind average and scale. JTWC, whose tracks this page shows, uses 1-minute winds. IMD uses 3-minute winds and its own classes, from depression to super cyclonic storm; the Bureau of Meteorology uses 10-minute winds and Categories 1 to 5, based on the strongest gusts. The official class in your country is the one your national agency gives.
Who names cyclones?
In the North Indian Ocean, IMD (RSMC New Delhi) names cyclones from a list made by 13 countries of the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones. In the Southern Hemisphere, Meteo-France La Reunion with Mauritius and Madagascar, the Bureau of Meteorology, Fiji Met and other centres name storms from their own regional lists.
What is the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane and a typhoon?
Nothing but the place. All are tropical cyclones. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific they are called hurricanes, in the Northwest Pacific typhoons, and in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific cyclones.
