Fire Map: Live US Wildfire Map Today

Updated · 29 Oct 2026

NASA's NOAA-20 satellite detected 448 fire hotspots across the lower 48 US states in the past 24 hours, most of them in the Southeast region (145); 5 were in California. Hotspots are heat signals, not confirmed wildfires (farm burns and industrial flares show up too), so for evacuation orders always follow your county and state fire agency.

Key context

How satellites see fires

The VIIRS instrument on NOAA's NOAA-20 satellite measures heat at a resolution of about 375 metres. When a pixel is much hotter than its surroundings, NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) flags it as a hotspot and estimates its fire radiative power (FRP) in megawatts. We group nearby hotspots into 0.2° cells and colour them by total fire power.

Clouds and thick smoke can hide fires, and a satellite only sees a place when it passes overhead, so the map can miss small or short fires.

Questions and answers

Where are the fires right now?
In the past 24 hours the most hotspots were in Southeast (145), Midwest and Plains (125), Northeast (69). Tap a dot on the map to see its fire power and the time of the satellite pass.
Where can I see a California fire map?
This map covers California with the rest of the US (5 hotspots there in the past 24 hours). For official perimeters, evacuation zones and incident updates in California, use CAL FIRE's incident page and your county's alert system.
Is there a fire near me?
Zoom into your area on the map above. A dot means a satellite saw intense heat there in the past 24 hours. For real-time evacuation orders, sign up for your county's emergency alerts; the MonitorWorld app can also alert you to fires near places you follow.
How current is this fire map?
The NOAA-20 satellite passes over each part of the US about twice a day, and NASA publishes detections within about 3 hours. We refresh the map every 30 minutes, so a new fire can take a few hours to appear.
Why does the map show fires that are not wildfires?
The satellite detects heat, not smoke or flames. Crop and prescribed burns, gas flares and some industrial sites also show up as hotspots. Large clusters of hotspots over several passes usually mean a real wildfire.
