Key context

Earthquakes by region

M2.5+ quakes listed by USGS inside each region. Normal = average per year over 1996-2025 at the magnitude shown.

How big is big?

Magnitude is logarithmic: each whole step means about 32 times more energy. USGS estimates these yearly averages worldwide, based on records since 1900:

MagnitudeClassPer year (world)
M8+Great1
M7-7.9Major15
M6-6.9Strong134
M5-5.9Moderate1,319

How these pages work

Every 10 minutes we read the USGS real-time feeds and count the quakes inside each region's area. Once a week we ask the USGS catalog for 30 years of quakes in the same area, so the "normal" numbers compare like with like. Quakes of M5.5 or more get their own page with aftershocks, PAGER alerts and history; the pages keep one address per USGS event.

USGS lists small quakes most completely in the United States. Elsewhere its catalog is reliable from about M4 to M4.5, so national agencies (JMA, PHIVOLCS, AFAD, NCS, BMKG and others) list many more small quakes. Each region page links to its official agency.

Questions and answers

Which country has the most earthquakes?
USGS says Indonesia has the most quakes in total because of its size and its long subduction zones, while Japan has the most per unit of area. Both sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The table above compares our regions using the same USGS data.
Where do most earthquakes happen?
Around the Pacific Ring of Fire, the chain of subduction zones and faults around the Pacific Ocean. USGS estimates that about 81% of the world's largest quakes happen there. The second belt runs from the Mediterranean through Turkey, Iran and the Himalaya to Indonesia.
How many earthquakes happen every day?
USGS locates about 20,000 quakes a year worldwide, or roughly 55 a day, and estimates that millions more are too small to record. In the past 30 days USGS listed 1,937 quakes of M2.5+ (65 a day).
Why does every strong quake get its own page?
For every quake of M5.5 or more, MonitorWorld builds a page with the USGS magnitude, depth, nearest towns, PAGER impact alert, felt reports, aftershocks and the largest past quakes within 250 km. The pages update for several weeks and keep the same address.
Can earthquakes be predicted?
No. USGS states that no scientist has ever predicted a major earthquake. Scientists can only estimate the long-term probability of quakes in an area. Early-warning systems such as ShakeAlert detect a quake that has already started and warn seconds before the shaking arrives.
