Busy years usually mean one large quake and its aftershocks: the peak year here was 2005 with 906. Counts cover India, including the Himalayan states, north-east India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (borders approximate). They come from the USGS ComCat catalog, which records small quakes more completely in the US than elsewhere, so compare like with like.

Plates and faults
Most of India's strong quakes come from the collision of the Indian Plate with Asia. India moves north at about 4-5 cm per year, and much of that is taken up on the Main Himalayan Thrust beneath the Himalaya, from Kashmir through Uttarakhand, Nepal and Sikkim to Arunachal Pradesh. North-east India is squeezed from two sides and had the great Assam quakes of 1897 and 1950.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit on a separate subduction zone, the northern end of the M9.1 rupture of December 2004. Inside the Indian Plate, quakes are rarer but can still be deadly, like Bhuj in Gujarat (M7.7, 2001) and Latur in Maharashtra (M6.2, 1993).
- Main Himalayan Thrust (Himalayan states and the Nepal border)
- Indo-Burman ranges and the Shillong plateau (north-east India)
- Andaman Trench (Andaman and Nicobar Islands)
- Kutch rift faults (Gujarat, 2001 Bhuj)
- Koyna-Warna region (Maharashtra, reservoir-related quakes)
Where the recent quakes were
Of the 9 quakes of the past 30 days, 8 were shallow (less than 70 km deep), 1 intermediate (70-300 km) and 0 deep (more than 300 km). 9 reached M4 or more. The places USGS named most often were Bamboo Flat, India (2), Port Blair, India (2), Rāmpur, India (1).
Official sources and warnings
- National Center for Seismology (NCS): India's official quake monitoring agency; it reports smaller quakes than USGS, often within minutes.
- INCOIS Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre: tsunami warnings for India's coasts and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA): preparedness guidance and emergency alerts.
What to do in an earthquake
If you feel shaking: Drop, Cover and Hold On until it stops. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture, and do not run outside during the shaking. On a coast, strong or long shaking is a natural tsunami warning: move to high ground or inland at once, on foot if you can. Then follow your local officials; this page is not a warning service.
In India, Drop, Cover and Hold On, and follow NDMA and state disaster authority instructions. In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and on the east coast, move to high ground after strong or long shaking and follow INCOIS warnings.
