The conflict in short

On 7 October 2023 Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking some 250 hostages. Israel's military campaign in Gaza followed, with very high Palestinian casualties and destruction reported by the UN and the Gaza health authorities. Ceasefires and hostage-prisoner exchanges followed in rounds; a new ceasefire took effect in October 2025.

Hezbollah in Lebanon began firing at northern Israel in October 2023. Israel escalated in September 2024 with strikes and a ground operation in southern Lebanon, and a ceasefire took effect on 27 November 2024, with Israeli strikes and violations reported by both sides since. Check the dated reports on this page for the current situation.

Gaza map: the Gaza Strip at a glance

The Gaza Strip is a narrow Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean coast, about 41 km long and 6 to 12 km wide, with an area of about 365 km². It borders Israel to the north and east and Egypt to the south. It is divided into five governorates, from north to south: North Gaza, Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah. About 2.1 million people lived there before the war, according to the UN, most of them refugees or their descendants.

Goods and people enter through a few crossings: Rafah to Egypt, and Kerem Shalom (Karem Abu Salem), Erez (Beit Hanoun) and Zikim from Israel. Which crossings are open changes often; the UN publishes the current status. Our map shows UCDP events only; we do not draw military positions or withdrawal lines inside Gaza.

How we handle sensitive data here

Casualty figures are always given as "reported by , "; UCDP figures appear with their best, low and high estimates, and we never mix sources. We do not show live rocket alerts, interception sites or military positions; Israel's military censor bans publishing them in real time, and they can endanger people. For official alerts in Israel, use the Home Front Command app.
