El Fasher, Sudan: Map, What Happened and Latest News
Updated · 29 Oct 2026
El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, has been held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since 26 October 2025, when it fell after an 18-month siege. The UN human rights office documented more than 6,000 killings in the days around the takeover, and a UN fact-finding mission found "hallmarks of genocide" (19 February 2026). Amnesty International says fewer than 70,000 people live there now, out of more than a million before the war. UCDP recorded 13 armed-conflict events in North Darfur (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026); the full war is on the Sudan war map.

Key context
What happened in El Fasher
El Fasher was the last big city in Darfur held by the Sudanese army and allied Darfuri armed groups. Fighting with the RSF began there on 10 May 2024, and the RSF besieged the city for 18 months. In April 2025 the RSF attacked Zamzam camp just south of the city, where the UN human rights office documented at least 1,013 civilians killed and about 400,000 people fled.
The RSF entered El Fasher on 26 October 2025. The UN human rights office documented more than 6,000 killings from 25 to 27 October, and the WHO reported more than 460 people killed at the Saudi Maternity Hospital. Satellite analysis by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab found clusters consistent with human bodies. In February 2026 a UN Fact-Finding Mission said genocidal intent against the Zaghawa and Fur was "the only reasonable inference"; no court has ruled on it yet, and the International Criminal Court is investigating crimes in Darfur.
El Fasher today
The city is under RSF control and part of the territory of the RSF-led "Tasis" administration, whose presidential council took its oath in Nyala in August 2025. The first UN mission reached El Fasher on 26 December 2025; by late 2026 a few aid groups work there, some residents have returned, and Amnesty and local media report arrests and abuses. Drone strikes by both sides hit Darfur and Kordofan, and peace efforts led by the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE (the Quad) have not produced a truce.
Where the people went
IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix counted more than 106,000 people displaced from El Fasher in the month after the takeover, most to Tawila, Mellit and other places in the locality; Chad registered 19,383 new refugee arrivals by 29 December 2025. Across Sudan, IOM counts about 8.6 million people displaced inside the country (21 September 2026). The IPC confirmed famine in El Fasher on 4 November 2025. UN OCHA Sudan and IOM DTM Sudan publish the latest figures.
