Who is fighting in Yemen

Yemen's war began in 2014, when the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) took the capital Sanaa. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 for the internationally recognised government, now led by the Presidential Leadership Council formed in 2022. The Houthis control Sanaa and most of the north-west, where most Yemenis live; government-aligned forces, including the Southern Transitional Council, hold Aden and much of the south and east.

A UN-brokered truce in 2022 reduced Saudi air strikes and Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, but fighting along the front lines (Marib, Taiz, Hodeidah, Al Dhale) continues, as the dots on the map show.

Why the Houthis attack ships

Since November 2023 the Houthis have fired missiles and drones at ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and seized the Galaxy Leader, saying they act in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Most container lines rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope. The US and UK struck Houthi targets from January 2024; a US campaign in March-May 2025 ended with an Oman-brokered US-Houthi truce, but attacks on other ships continued, and two ships were sunk in July 2025.

For the shipping lane itself, our chokepoint model rates Bab el-Mandeb YELLOW today.

How to read the casualty numbers

UCDP numbers are estimates per event (best, low, high), reported by UCDP with a date. They cover the last complete month. Actor names in the tables are UCDP's own labels, which can differ from names used in the news.

Questions and answers

What are Houthi attacks?
Missile, drone and boat attacks by Yemen's Houthi movement on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, on Israel, and in the past on Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The shipping attacks began in November 2023 and forced most container traffic away from the Suez route.
What are the Houthis fighting for?
The Houthis say they fight for control of Yemen against what they call foreign aggression, and since 2023 in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Their opponents see them as an Iran-backed armed group that seized power by force. The Yemeni civil war is about who governs Yemen and how its regions share power.
Did the Houthis attack Saudi Arabia today?
The latest report on this page that mentions Saudi Arabia is "Saudi Arabia offered Houthis $1 bn in Iran-brokered ceasefire deal: Israeli media" (05:15 UTC). Check the date and source.
Why do the Houthis attack ships?
They say the attacks pressure Israel and its supporters over the war in Gaza, and they have mostly targeted ships they link to Israel, the US or the UK, although many unrelated ships were hit. The attacks also raise the Houthis' profile at home and in the region.
How many people have died in the Yemen war?
In the latest UCDP window (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026), UCDP reports 2,928 deaths from 234 events in Yemen (best estimate). Over the whole war since 2014, UN agencies have estimated hundreds of thousands of deaths, most of them from hunger and disease rather than fighting.
