Who is fighting in Sudan

The war began on 15 April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo ("Hemedti"). The two had seized power together in a 2021 coup but fell out over merging the RSF into the army.

The army retook Khartoum in March 2025 and holds the east, including Port Sudan, where the government is based. The RSF controls most of Darfur; in October 2025 it took El Fasher, the army's last big stronghold in Darfur, amid reports of mass killings. Fighting continues in Kordofan.

The humanitarian picture

UN agencies describe Sudan as the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis, with more than 12 million people forced from their homes and famine confirmed in parts of Darfur. Casualty counts are very uncertain because access is limited; UCDP's figures here are its own estimates for the latest window, reported by UCDP.
