Key context
Where the pizza index comes from
The idea is old Washington folklore. Frank Meeks, who owned Domino's franchises in the Washington area, told reporters that deliveries to the Pentagon, CIA and White House jumped the night before the US invasion of Panama in 1989 and during the 1990-91 Gulf crisis. The story spread as "the pizza index" or "Pizzint" (pizza intelligence).
In the 2020s, accounts on social media started posting screenshots of Google Maps "popular times" for pizzerias near the Pentagon, and some busy nights happened before real events. That got a lot of attention, but nobody has shown that it predicts crises better than chance.
