What a carrier deployment signals

A carrier strike group, with its air wing, escorts and supply ships, is the most visible way for the US to show force. Two carriers in the same region usually mean a crisis: the Navy cannot keep many carriers deployed at once because of maintenance and crew rest. When a carrier's deployment is extended or it moves to a new region at short notice, it is often a sign of policy, not routine.

The weekly tracker gives regions such as "Arabian Sea" or "Western Pacific". Exact positions are kept secret for safety. This page never plots more precise positions than the public source.

About the source

The data comes from the USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker, a public weekly summary by the US Naval Institute. We restate the facts in our own words; read the original edition for the full text and photos.

Questions and answers

Where are the US aircraft carriers right now?
In the USNI tracker of 26 Oct 2026: USS Theodore Roosevelt in Philippine Sea; USS George Washington in Arabian Sea; USS George H.W. Bush in Arabian Sea; USS Ronald Reagan in Eastern Pacific; USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in Western Atlantic; USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in Western Atlantic. The tracker is weekly and gives regions, not exact positions.
How many aircraft carriers does the US have?
The US Navy has operated 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers: ten of the Nimitz class and USS Gerald R. Ford, the first of the Ford class. The oldest, USS Nimitz, is due to retire around 2026, and USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) is the next Ford-class carrier. At any time several carriers are in maintenance, so usually only a few are deployed.
Where is the USS Gerald R. Ford?
USS Gerald R. Ford is not listed with a location in the latest USNI tracker (26 Oct 2026). Ships in home port or maintenance are often left off the map.
How often is the carrier tracker updated?
USNI News publishes its Fleet and Marine Tracker about once a week, usually on Monday, from public Navy information. MonitorWorld checks it every hour and updates this page when a new edition appears. For operational security, the Navy does not publish real-time carrier positions.
