Key context

What causes internet outages

In the third quarter of 2026, Cloudflare's quarterly report counted 49 internet disruptions around the world: 19 shutdowns ordered by governments (18 of them exam shutdowns in Iraq), 14 power outages in 10 countries, 5 natural disasters, plus cable cuts, a data-centre cooling failure and a cyberattack (Cloudflare, 27 October 2026). Many were short: 14 ended within an hour.

The biggest global outages of 2025 and 2026 had a different cause: a bad configuration change or a hidden software bug at one large provider. AWS (October 2025), Microsoft Azure (October 2025) and Cloudflare (November 2025, February 2026) all said in their post-mortems that no attack was involved. Because thousands of websites and apps run on the same few clouds and CDNs, one such fault can make it look as if "the internet is down".

Is the internet down, or just my connection?

If one site fails, check its status: our is the internet down page shows the live status of the 23 services and runs a quick connection test in your browser. If every site fails on every device, restart your router and check your internet provider's outage page.

Internet shutdowns: when a government turns it off

Some outages are deliberate. Governments ordered at least 313 internet shutdowns in 52 countries in 2025, the most since tracking began in 2016 (Access Now). In 2026 Iran cut its whole country off for about 88 days. Our internet shutdowns tracker lists every 2026 case we could confirm, with dates and sources.

What this map shows, and what it does not

Coloured dots are open incidents that a provider's own status page ties to a place: AWS, Google Cloud and Azure regions, and Cloudflare data centres. A long-running regional disruption (open for more than 14 days) is drawn as a major problem but does not count as "the provider is down". Grey dots are dated past events from the list above; tap one for the date and source.

We do not have data from home internet providers (ISPs) such as Comcast Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T or BT, and we do not collect user reports. If your own connection is down and every service here is fine, the fault is most likely on your side or with your ISP: check your ISP's outage page or app. We also do not show Cloudflare Radar or IODA measurements: their licences do not allow use on a commercial site like ours.

Questions and answers

Is there an internet outage right now?
Not a global one. As of 12:38 UTC none of the 23 big clouds, CDNs and apps we check reports a major problem; Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services (AWS) report a minor issue. If your internet is down, the cause is probably your device, your router or your internet provider: see is the internet down for a quick check.
Is there a global internet outage today?
Today the providers we check posted 12 incidents (past 24 hours), most of them small. A truly global outage is rare: the last big ones were Cloudflare on 18 November 2025 (about 6 hours), Microsoft Azure Front Door on 29 October 2025 (about 8.5 hours) and AWS in N. Virginia on 20 October 2025 (about 14 hours).
Why is my internet down?
Most often the cause is local: Wi-Fi, the router or modem, a cable, or your internet provider's line. Restart the router, try another device and try mobile data. If only some sites fail, look at their status here. If everything fails on every device, check your ISP's outage page or app; ISPs post local outages there first.
Is there an internet outage map for my area?
Your internet provider's outage page is the most reliable map for your street, because only the ISP sees its own network. This map covers the layer above: the clouds, CDNs and apps that serve the whole world. We do not have data from home internet providers (ISPs) such as Comcast Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T or BT, and we do not collect user reports. If your own connection is down and every service here is fine, the fault is most likely on your side or with your ISP.
What was the biggest internet outage?
In 2025-2026 the widest outages were AWS us-east-1 on 20 October 2025 (about 14 hours, a DNS fault in DynamoDB) and Cloudflare on 18 November 2025 (about 6 hours, which Cloudflare called its worst since 2019). For whole countries, the longest was Iran's government blackout of about 88 days, from 28 February to 26 May 2026.
How long do internet outages last?
Many are short. In the third quarter of 2026, Cloudflare counted 49 disruptions worldwide, and 14 of them ended within an hour. Big cloud outages usually last 1 to 14 hours. Cable cuts can slow a region for weeks, and government shutdowns have lasted from hours to months.
