Haiti Gangs Map: Where Gang Violence Is Now
Updated · 29 Oct 2026
Gangs control about 90% of Port-au-Prince, by the UN's estimate of July 2025, and they keep expanding into the Artibonite and Centre departments (BINUH, Q2 2026). The UN counted 1,123 people killed in Haiti from July to early October 2026, and IOM counts nearly 1.5 million people displaced. This map shows the areas named in UN reports and the 8 armed-conflict events recorded by UCDP (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026); the list below has the latest reports.

Key context
Who the gangs are
- Viv Ansanm ("Living Together"): a coalition formed in September 2023 from the rival G9 and G-Pèp alliances. Its best-known leader is Jimmy "Barbecue" Chérizier, a former police officer indicted in the US in August 2025. It controls most of Port-au-Prince.
- Gran Grif: the largest gang in the Artibonite valley, led by Luckson Elan, who has been under UN sanctions since September 2024.
- 400 Mawozo and other groups east of the capital (Croix-des-Bouquets, Ganthier), known for mass kidnappings.
- Both Viv Ansanm and Gran Grif have been designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations by the US since May 2025.
What changed in 2026
The international force changed shape. In September 2025 the UN Security Council turned the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support mission into a Gang Suppression Force (GSF), authorised up to 5,550 personnel. The first Chadian troops arrived on 1 April 2026, and on 12 October 2026 the force had 1,563 people, about 30% of its authorised size, with a base in the Artibonite. Its mandate now runs to 31 March 2027.
Politics stalled: the Transitional Presidential Council's mandate ended on 7 February 2026 with no successor, and the elections planned for 13 December 2026 were postponed in October with no new date. In October gangs ambushed a GSF vehicle and abducted four Salvadoran technicians, and El Salvador sent troops to free them.
How to read the numbers
BINUH, the UN office in Haiti, counts everyone killed in security-related violence, including people killed during police operations: in the first quarter of 2026, 69% of victims died in security-force operations and 27% at the hands of gangs (BINUH). UCDP counts only organised armed violence that meets its own criteria, so its numbers are far lower. We show each figure with its source and date and never add them together.
Our risk score for Haiti is a model built mainly from conflict news, so it can read low for a crisis driven by criminal violence. For travel, use official advice: the US State Department rates Haiti "Level 4: Do not travel".
