## Key context

### Who issues tsunami warnings

In the US, two centres of the National Weather Service issue tsunami messages: the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska (US mainland, Alaska and Canada) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu (Hawaii, US Pacific territories and international threat messages for the Pacific and Caribbean). Japan's JMA, Indonesia's BMKG, Chile's SHOA and others warn for their own coasts.

This page reads the two US centres' public bulletin feeds every 10 minutes and links each bulletin to its full text on tsunami.gov.

### The USGS tsunami flag is not a warning

USGS marks large earthquakes in ocean regions with a tsunami flag so people check the warning centres. Most flagged quakes cause no tsunami at all. Only the warning centres and your national authority decide whether a warning is needed.

### Recent quakes with a tsunami flag

These M5.5+ quakes of the past 60 days carried the USGS tsunami flag. Each page shows what happened next, the aftershocks and the history of the area.

## FAQ

### Is there a tsunami warning right now?

Not from the US warning centers in their latest bulletins (checked 10:28 UTC). Check your national warning agency too, because each country issues its own warnings.

### What is the difference between a tsunami warning, advisory and watch?

A warning means a dangerous tsunami with widespread flooding is expected: move to high ground or inland. An advisory means strong currents and waves dangerous near the water: stay off beaches and out of harbours. A watch means a distant earthquake may cause a tsunami and officials are checking. An information statement means no threat, or a very small one.

### Which earthquakes cause tsunamis?

Mostly large, shallow earthquakes under the sea, usually magnitude 7 or more on subduction zones, which move the sea floor up or down. Landslides and volcanic eruptions, such as Hunga Tonga in 2022, can also cause tsunamis.

### How fast does a tsunami travel?

In the deep ocean a tsunami moves at about 700 to 800 km/h, as fast as a jet airliner, and can cross the Pacific in less than a day. Near the coast it slows down and grows taller.

### What should I do if I feel a strong earthquake at the coast?

Do not wait for an official warning. If the shaking is strong or lasts long, or the sea suddenly pulls back, move immediately to high ground or as far inland as you can, on foot if possible, and stay there until officials say it is safe.
