# Taiwan Strait Live Map: China Drills and Latest News

Updated 10:28 UTC, 29 Oct 2026. Canonical: https://monitorworld.app/live/taiwan-strait

MonitorWorld's chokepoint model rates the Taiwan Strait **YELLOW (elevated risk)** with a disruption score of 20/100 as of 10:28 UTC; main driver: Cross-strait military tensions and PLA exercises. Much of the world's container traffic between Northeast Asia and the rest of the world sails through this strait, and China's military drills around Taiwan are the main risk to it.

## Key context

### Why the Taiwan Strait matters

The strait separates Taiwan from mainland China's Fujian province. Container ships between Japan, Korea, northern China and Southeast Asia, Europe or the Middle East use it, and Taiwan makes most of the world's most advanced computer chips, so any blockade would hit global supply chains within days.

China claims Taiwan as its territory and has not ruled out force. Taiwan has been governed separately since 1949 and runs its own elected government. The US has no formal relations with Taipei but sells it weapons under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979.

### Drills, the median line and what to watch

For decades an unofficial median line kept the two sides' aircraft apart; since 2020 Chinese aircraft cross it routinely. Large exercises such as Joint Sword-2024A and 2024B, Strait Thunder-2025A and Justice Mission-2025 (29-30 December 2025, reported by [NPR](https://www.npr.org/2025/12/29/g-s1-103877/chinese-military-drills-around-taiwan)) rehearsed a blockade. We found no report of a named encirclement drill in 2026 up to August. Warning signs analysts watch: a sudden jump in daily aircraft and ship counts reported by Taiwan's defence ministry, live-fire zones declared near shipping lanes, and coast guard boarding drills.

Military aircraft on this map come from public ADS-B data and are at least 20 minutes old; Chinese military aircraft usually do not broadcast, so the map shows only part of the activity.

### China-Taiwan war: is there one, and what would trigger it

There is no war between China and Taiwan. The last fighting between the two sides was in the 1950s, when China shelled the Taiwan-held islands of Kinmen and Matsu; in the 1995-96 crisis China fired missiles into the sea near Taiwan, but there was no combat. The Chinese civil war never ended with a peace treaty, which is why China still calls Taiwan a province to be "reunified".

What analysts watch for: a blockade or "quarantine" of Taiwan's ports, live-fire zones that close shipping lanes, a build-up of landing ships and troops on the Fujian coast, and attacks on Taiwan's outlying islands. US officials have said China wants the military capability to take Taiwan by 2027; that is a goal for capability, not a date for a war. MonitorWorld does not predict whether a war will happen.

## FAQ

### Is China going to invade Taiwan?

No one knows. China's leaders say they prefer peaceful "reunification" but keep the option of force, and the US military has said China wants the capability by 2027. Our chokepoint model rates the strait YELLOW (elevated risk) today. Watch Taiwan's daily reports of Chinese aircraft and ships for real changes.

### Are China and Taiwan officially at war?

No. There has been no fighting between them since the 1950s, and neither side has declared war. The Chinese civil war that split them in 1949 never ended with a peace treaty, and China says it may use force to take control of Taiwan.

### What would the US do if China invaded Taiwan?

The US has had no defence treaty with Taiwan since 1979. Under the Taiwan Relations Act it sells Taiwan weapons for its defence, and it keeps a policy of "strategic ambiguity": it does not say in advance whether it would fight. Japan, Australia and other partners have also said peace in the strait matters to them.

### How wide is the Taiwan Strait?

About 130 km (81 miles) at its narrowest point and about 180 km on average.

### Is the Taiwan Strait international waters?

Most of it is, beyond the 12-nautical-mile territorial seas of each side. The US and its allies sail warships through it to show that; China says the strait is under its jurisdiction.

### What are the PLA drills around Taiwan?

Large Chinese military exercises that surround Taiwan with ships, aircraft and coast guard vessels, often after political events in Taipei or Washington. Recent ones were named Joint Sword-2024A, Joint Sword-2024B, Strait Thunder-2025A and Justice Mission-2025, held on 29-30 December 2025 (reported by NPR).
