# Suez Canal Live: Status, Map and Shipping News

Updated 10:28 UTC, 29 Oct 2026. Canonical: https://monitorworld.app/live/suez-canal

MonitorWorld's chokepoint model rates the Suez Canal **YELLOW (elevated risk)** with a disruption score of 30/100 as of 10:28 UTC; main driver: JWC Listed Area: adjacent to active Red Sea conflict and Iran-Israel war spillover. The canal is open and run by Egypt's Suez Canal Authority, but traffic depends on the Red Sea: when ships avoid the Bab el-Mandeb, they also skip Suez.

## Key numbers

- Status (our chokepoint model): **YELLOW**
- Disruption score: **30/100**
- Media reports, past 3 days: **0**
- Length of the canal: **193 km** (no locks, sea level)

## Key context

### Why the Suez Canal matters

Opened in 1869 and nationalised by Egypt in 1956, the canal cuts about 7,000 km off a voyage between Europe and Asia compared with sailing around Africa. Before the Red Sea crisis it carried roughly 12 to 15% of world trade and was one of Egypt's largest sources of foreign currency, with record revenue of about 10 billion dollars in 2023.

When Houthi attacks began in late 2023, transits fell by more than half and Egypt's canal revenue dropped sharply in 2024. The Houthis paused their attacks after the October 2025 Gaza ceasefire but resumed them in 2026, so as of October 2026 the risk on the route is high again. Every change in Red Sea security shows up in Suez traffic within days.

### When the canal itself stopped

In March 2021 the container ship Ever Given ran aground and blocked the canal for six days, holding up hundreds of ships and an estimated 9 to 10 billion dollars of trade per day. The canal has since been widened and deepened at its southern end to make a repeat less likely.

## FAQ

### Is the Suez Canal open?

Yes. The canal is open, and Egypt's Suez Canal Authority publishes transit numbers. Our model rates the route YELLOW (elevated risk) today, mainly because of the risk in the Red Sea and at the Bab el-Mandeb, not in the canal itself.

### How many ships use the Suez Canal per day?

In normal years about 50 to 70 ships a day. During the Red Sea crisis that fell to roughly half, as many container ships and tankers sailed around Africa instead.

### Why are ships avoiding the Suez Canal?

Because the route to and from the canal passes the Bab el-Mandeb, where Houthi forces have attacked ships since late 2023, with new attacks on tankers and Saudi shipping since July 2026. Owners weigh longer voyages around the Cape of Good Hope against attack risk and war-risk insurance.

### Who owns the Suez Canal?

Egypt. The Suez Canal Authority, a state body, has run it since Egypt nationalised the canal in 1956.
