### Who is fighting in Sudan

The war began on 15 April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo ("Hemedti"). The two had seized power together in a 2021 coup but fell out over merging the RSF into the army.

The army retook Khartoum in March 2025 and holds the east, including Port Sudan, where the government is based. The RSF controls most of Darfur; on 26 October 2025 it took El Fasher, the army's last big stronghold in Darfur, amid reports of mass killings. In August 2025 the RSF and its allies swore in a rival government ("Tasis") based in Nyala. The fighting then moved to Kordofan: the RSF took Babanusa and the Heglig oil field in December 2025, the army broke the siege of Dilling in January 2026, and in June 2026 the UN warned of a battle for El Obeid (reported by [Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/12/8/rsf-claims-seizure-of-key-heglig-oil-field-in-sudan) and [Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/1/27/sudan-army-says-nearly-two-year-rsf-siege-of-key-town-broken)). For the city, the UN findings and where its people went, see the [El Fasher page](https://monitorworld.app/live/el-fasher).

### The humanitarian picture

UN agencies describe Sudan as the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis. In June 2026 the IOM counted 8.8 million people displaced inside Sudan, and about 4.4 million who had returned home, mostly to Khartoum, Al Jazirah and Sennar ([IOM via ReliefWeb](https://reliefweb.int/report/sudan/4-million-returns-sudan-risk-amid-fragile-conditions-iom-warns)); more than 4.5 million people have fled abroad (UN, April 2026). In November 2025 the IPC confirmed famine in El Fasher and Kadugli ([FAO](https://www.fao.org/newsroom/detail/famine-conditions-confirmed-in-sudan-fasher-and-kadugli-as-hunger-and-malnutrition-ease-where-conflict-subsides/en)). Casualty counts are very uncertain because access is limited; UCDP's figures here are its own estimates for the latest window, reported by UCDP.

## FAQ

### Who is fighting in Sudan?

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under General al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under General Dagalo (Hemedti), plus allied militias on both sides. The war started on 15 April 2023.

### What happened in El Fasher?

El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, was besieged by the RSF for more than a year and fell to the RSF in October 2025. UN officials and aid groups reported mass killings of civilians and large displacement. The [El Fasher page](https://monitorworld.app/live/el-fasher) has the dated timeline and UN figures.

### How many people have died in the Sudan war?

UCDP reports 277 deaths from 45 events in its latest window (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026). Estimates for the whole war run to tens of thousands of direct deaths or more, and many more from hunger and disease; the true number is unknown.

### Is there a ceasefire in Sudan?

No. As of October 2026 no ceasefire is in force. Several mediation efforts (Jeddah talks, the African Union, the Quad of the US, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt) produced short truces or proposals; in November 2025 the RSF said it accepted a Quad truce plan, but the army did not. On 6 October 2026 the UN Human Rights Council called for an immediate and complete ceasefire (reported by Al Jazeera). Check the dated news above.
