## Key context

### How this page works

The page holds two lists: every US embassy demonstration alert of the past 30 days, placed at the city it names (or the capital when no city is named), and the cities and states most named in protest news this week. When you tap the button or search a place, your browser measures the distance to each one and shows the closest. MonitorWorld never receives your position.

The city and ZIP search uses an offline list of about 8,000 cities and US ZIP code areas from GeoNames. A ZIP code is matched to the centre of its area, which is precise enough for a radius of a few tens of kilometres.

### How to stay safe near a protest

- Stay away from demonstrations if you can, even peaceful ones: crowds can turn confrontational quickly, and police may use tear gas or close roads and transport without warning.
- If you are caught near one, move away calmly to a side street or a building, keep your phone charged and know two routes back to where you stay.
- Follow instructions from the police and local authorities, and check local news and official accounts for road closures and curfews.
- In some countries taking part in a protest, or even filming one, is illegal for foreigners and can lead to arrest or deportation.
- US citizens abroad can enrol in STEP to get embassy alerts; UK and Canadian travellers can sign up for alerts on GOV.UK and travel.gc.ca.

## FAQ

### Are there any protests near me today?

Tap "Use my location" above to see the official demonstration alerts and protest news places closest to you. The page covers protests abroad through US embassy alerts, and in the US it shows the places most named in protest news this week (now Washington, Georgia, United States, New York, Texas and Wisconsin). For events in your own town, also check your city or police department website.

### Does this page track or store my location?

No. Your browser asks for permission, the position stays on your device, and the page compares it with a list it already holds. Nothing is sent to MonitorWorld or stored. The city and ZIP search uses an offline GeoNames list, also in your browser.

### Why don't you show exact protest locations?

On purpose. Exact, live positions of crowds or police can put people at risk. We show places at city level only, from official alerts and media reports, and we never publish names or photos of people.

### How do I find planned protests and marches near me?

Organisers publish their planned events on their own websites and social media; we do not list them. Your city or police department usually posts permits and road closures. Abroad, the embassy alerts on this page often name the date of a planned demonstration.

### What should I do if a protest starts near me?

Move away calmly, avoid the crowd and any police lines, and follow instructions from the authorities. Keep your phone charged and check local news for closures. Abroad, remember that joining or filming a protest can be illegal for foreigners.
