## Key context

### Kashmir and the Line of Control

The former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir is divided. India administers Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Pakistan administers Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and China administers Aksai Chin and the Shaksgam Valley. India and Pakistan each claim the whole region. Between them runs the Line of Control (LoC), about 740 km long, a ceasefire line set by the 1972 Simla Agreement, not an international border.

Map note: our base map uses Natural Earth data as it is. Its lines in Kashmir show the areas each country administers and do not endorse any claim. The UN has kept a military observer group on the line since 1949 (UNMOGIP). The map plots only UCDP events in the Kashmir region and clashes between the two states; Pakistan's other conflicts are on the [Afghanistan-Pakistan page](https://monitorworld.app/live/afghanistan-pakistan-war).

### The May 2025 conflict in short

After gunmen killed 26 people near Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, India put the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty "in abeyance" and blamed Pakistan-based groups; Pakistan denied any role, closed its airspace and border and said it could suspend the Simla Agreement. On 7 May India struck nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir (Operation Sindoor). Pakistan answered (Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos), and for four days both sides used missiles, drones and aircraft.

Each government gave its own casualty figures: India's military said more than 100 militants and 35 to 40 Pakistani soldiers were killed; Pakistan said 40 civilians and 13 military personnel died. We do not add these numbers together. A ceasefire took effect on 10 May 2025; the US announced it first, and India says the two sides agreed it directly.

### What changed since

No new armed clash between the two states was reported in 2026 in the sources we checked. Tension continues by other means: India keeps the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance despite an August 2026 arbitration ruling that it remains in force, trade and air links stay cut, and two warships collided in the Arabian Sea in September 2026. Both countries have nuclear weapons, which is why analysts watch every crisis closely.

## FAQ

### What is the current situation between India and Pakistan?

There is no war. The ceasefire of 10 May 2025 holds, but relations are frozen: no trade, closed border crossings and airspace, and a dispute over the Indus Waters Treaty. UCDP recorded 0 clashes between the two states (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026). The latest media report on this page is "A Trigger in Jammu and Kashmir: Militant Violence under Indian Central Rule" (CrisisWatch, 29 Oct 2026 12:04 UTC).

### Why is Pakistan fighting with India?

The core dispute is Kashmir, which both countries claim in full since 1947. India accuses Pakistan of supporting militant groups that attack Indian-administered Kashmir and Indian cities; Pakistan denies it and accuses India of repression in Kashmir and of backing militants in Pakistan. Water from the Indus rivers is a growing second dispute.

### Who is stronger, India or Pakistan?

India has a much larger economy, population, army and defence budget, and more nuclear warheads (about 190 against about 170, SIPRI estimate for January 2026). Pakistan has a large, well-equipped army and air force and a nuclear doctrine that does not rule out first use. Because both have nuclear weapons, a full war would carry extreme risk for both.

### What happens if India and Pakistan go to war?

Past wars (1947, 1965, 1971, 1999) and the May 2025 clashes stayed limited. Studies of a nuclear exchange between the two countries project very large loss of life and global effects on climate and food supply, which is why other governments push hard for de-escalation in every crisis. MonitorWorld does not predict whether a war will happen.

### What is the Line of Control?

The de facto boundary of about 740 km that divides Indian- and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. It comes from the 1949 ceasefire line and was renamed in the 1972 Simla Agreement. It is not an international border; both countries claim the land on the other side.
