## Key context

### Forecast track: Tropical Storm Vance (NHC advisory 33, 15:00 UTC 29 Oct)

The forecast keeps the intensity about the same. Times are UTC; winds are 1-minute sustained winds unless noted. Read the [official text](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/MIATCPEP2.shtml) and the [official forecast graphic](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_ep2.shtml) before you make any decision.

| Time (UTC) | Position | Max wind | Strength |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Now: 29 Oct 06:00 | 21.0°N 108.4°W | 35 kt (40 mph) | tropical storm |
| 29 Oct 18:00 | 22.0°N 108.0°W | 30 kt (35 mph) | depression |
| 30 Oct 06:00 | 23.4°N 108.2°W | 25 kt (30 mph) | depression |

### Active storms in other oceans

Outside the NHC area, Super Typhoon In-fa (West Pacific, 130 kt) is active. See the [typhoon tracker](https://monitorworld.app/live/typhoon-tracker) for the West Pacific and the [cyclone tracker](https://monitorworld.app/live/cyclone-tracker) for the Indian Ocean and the Southern Hemisphere.

### The 2026 season in numbers

Atlantic: 10 named storms, 1 hurricane and 1 major hurricane so far; the strongest was Isaias, with peak winds of 105 kt (120 mph, 195 km/h) (Category 3). An average season (1991-2020) has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes, so 2026 is below the average count with 33 days of the season left.

East and Central Pacific: 24 named storms, 13 hurricanes and 11 major hurricanes; the strongest was Polo at 155 kt (180 mph, 285 km/h). The East Pacific average (1991-2020) is 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes, so the Pacific count is above its average. Counts come from NHC's operational best-track files and can change slightly in the final post-season review.

Storm energy tells the same story. NHC's season summary put the Atlantic's accumulated cyclone energy (ACE, a measure of how strong storms were and for how long) at 19.5 on 29 October 2026, 83% below the 1991-2020 normal, while the East Pacific stood at 247.3, 132% above normal ([NHC](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2026&basin=atl)).

### Notable hurricanes of 2025 and 2026

- **Hurricane Isaias** (9 Oct 2026, Category 2 at landfall; peak 105 kt (Category 3)): the only Atlantic hurricane of 2026 as of 29 October; made landfall near Destin, Florida, with 105 mph winds; NWS Tallahassee reported no deaths in its area ([NWS Tallahassee; NHC](https://weather.gov/media/tae/TropicalEventSummary/PSHTAE_2026AL09_Isaias_Summary.pdf)).
- **Hurricane Polo** (29 Sep 2026, Category 2 at landfall; peak 155 kt): made landfall just south of Las Barrancas, Baja California Sur, then again east of Guaymas, Sonora, as a Category 1 ([NHC advisories 34A and 36A](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2026/ep17/ep172026.public_a.034.shtml)).
- **Hurricane Melissa** (28 Oct 2025, Category 5, 160 kt (185 mph) at landfall): made landfall near New Hope, Jamaica: the strongest landfall on record in Jamaica and tied for the strongest Atlantic landfall by wind; 93 deaths reported by NHC (45 in Jamaica, 43 in Haiti), report revised 19 May 2026 ([NHC Tropical Cyclone Report](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/AL132025_Melissa.pdf)).

### Hurricane categories (Saffir-Simpson scale)

The category is based only on the maximum sustained wind. It does not include storm surge, rain or the size of the storm, which often cause most of the deaths and damage.

Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (NOAA). Winds are 1-minute sustained winds.

| Category | Wind (kt) | Wind (mph) | Wind (km/h) | Typical damage |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tropical depression | under 34 | under 39 | under 63 | rain and flooding |
| Tropical storm | 34-63 | 39-73 | 63-118 | named storm; flooding, some wind damage |
| Category 1 | 64-82 | 74-95 | 119-153 | damage to roofs and trees, power cuts |
| Category 2 | 83-95 | 96-110 | 154-177 | extensive damage, near-total power loss |
| Category 3 (major) | 96-112 | 111-129 | 178-208 | devastating damage |
| Category 4 (major) | 113-136 | 130-156 | 209-251 | catastrophic damage |
| Category 5 (major) | 137 or more | 157 or more | 252 or more | catastrophic; area uninhabitable for weeks |

### How to read the cone and the tracks

- **White area**: the NHC forecast cone. NHC builds it from circles that hold about two-thirds of its forecast errors of the past five years, so the centre leaves the cone about one time in three.
- **Dashed cyan line and small dots**: the forecast positions of the centre, with the forecast wind at each point. Tap a dot for the time and wind.
- **White line**: the past track of the storm. **Grey lines**: every other storm of this season, from the best-track files.
- Impacts reach far outside the cone. Storm surge and flooding rain kill more people than wind. Follow the watches and warnings of your national weather service.

### Hurricane, typhoon or cyclone: the same storm

All three are tropical cyclones: rotating storms that form over warm ocean water. Only the name changes with the ocean. Over the North Atlantic and the Northeast Pacific, a storm with sustained winds of 64 kt (74 mph) or more is a [hurricane](https://monitorworld.app/live/hurricane-tracker). Over the Northwest Pacific it is a [typhoon](https://monitorworld.app/live/typhoon-tracker). Over the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific it is a [cyclone](https://monitorworld.app/live/cyclone-tracker) (in Australia, a tropical cyclone of any strength).

## FAQ

### Is there a hurricane right now?

No hurricane, but there is tropical storm activity: as of 14:43 UTC, NHC tracks Tropical Storm Vance (35 kt). The list and the forecast tables above show the details; the official advisory is linked on each storm.

### Where is the hurricane now?

Tropical Storm Vance: 21.6°N 108.8°W, moving north at 8 kt, winds 35 kt (40 mph, 65 km/h) (NHC, 15:00 UTC). Tap a storm on the map for its forecast points.

### When is hurricane season?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with its peak from mid-August to late October. The East Pacific season runs from 15 May to 30 November and the Central Pacific season from 1 June to 30 November (NOAA). Today the Atlantic is in season, 33 days left.

### Is this the official NOAA hurricane tracker?

No. MonitorWorld reads NOAA's public data (the National Hurricane Center's active-storm list, forecast cone and best tracks) and shows it on one map with the other oceans. The official forecasts, watches and warnings are on nhc.noaa.gov and from your local National Weather Service office or national weather agency.

### How do I read the hurricane cone?

The cone shows where the centre of the storm will probably go. NHC sizes it so that the centre stays inside about two-thirds of the time, based on its forecast errors of the past five years. The cone says nothing about the size of the storm: dangerous wind, rain and storm surge often reach far outside it.

### How many hurricanes have there been in 2026?

By the NHC best-track files, the 2026 Atlantic season has had 10 named storms so far, 1 of them hurricanes and 1 major (Category 3+); the strongest was Isaias at 105 kt. The East and Central Pacific have had 24 named storms, 13 hurricanes and 11 major hurricanes; the strongest was Polo at 155 kt. An average Atlantic season (1991-2020) has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes (NOAA).
