Updated 12:32 UTC, 29 Oct 2026. Canonical: https://monitorworld.app/live/haiti-gang-map

**Gangs control about 90% of Port-au-Prince**, by the UN's estimate of July 2025, and they keep expanding into the Artibonite and Centre departments (BINUH, Q2 2026). The UN counted 1,123 people killed in Haiti from July to early October 2026, and IOM counts nearly 1.5 million people displaced. This map shows the areas named in UN reports and the 8 armed-conflict events recorded by UCDP (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026); the list below has the latest reports.

## Key numbers

## Key context

### Who the gangs are

- Viv Ansanm ("Living Together"): a coalition formed in September 2023 from the rival G9 and G-Pèp alliances. Its best-known leader is Jimmy "Barbecue" Chérizier, a former police officer indicted in the US in August 2025. It controls most of Port-au-Prince.
- Gran Grif: the largest gang in the Artibonite valley, led by Luckson Elan, who has been under UN sanctions since September 2024.
- 400 Mawozo and other groups east of the capital (Croix-des-Bouquets, Ganthier), known for mass kidnappings.
- Both Viv Ansanm and Gran Grif have been designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations by the US since May 2025.

### What changed in 2026

The international force changed shape. In September 2025 the UN Security Council turned the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support mission into a Gang Suppression Force (GSF), authorised up to 5,550 personnel. The first Chadian troops arrived on 1 April 2026, and on 12 October 2026 the force had 1,563 people, about 30% of its authorised size, with a base in the Artibonite. Its mandate now runs to 31 March 2027.

Politics stalled: the Transitional Presidential Council's mandate ended on 7 February 2026 with no successor, and the elections planned for 13 December 2026 were postponed in October with no new date. In October gangs ambushed a GSF vehicle and abducted four Salvadoran technicians, and El Salvador sent troops to free them.

### How to read the numbers

BINUH, the UN office in Haiti, counts everyone killed in security-related violence, including people killed during police operations: in the first quarter of 2026, 69% of victims died in security-force operations and 27% at the hands of gangs (BINUH). UCDP counts only organised armed violence that meets its own criteria, so its numbers are far lower. We show each figure with its source and date and never add them together.

Our risk score for Haiti is a model built mainly from conflict news, so it can read low for a crisis driven by criminal violence. For travel, use official advice: the US State Department rates Haiti "Level 4: Do not travel".

### UCDP events by month (30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026)

Reported by UCDP (Uppsala Conflict Data Program), candidate events 30 Aug 2026 to 30 Sep 2026. Deaths: best estimate, with the low-high range in brackets.

## FAQ

### How much of Haiti do gangs control?

The UN said in July 2025 that gangs control about 90% of Port-au-Prince, the capital, and it has not published a newer figure. Gangs have spread into the Artibonite and Centre departments and made their first raids in the South-East (BINUH, Q2 2026). Most of the north and the south-west see far less gang activity.

### Does Haiti have a cartel?

Not in the Mexican sense. Haiti's armed groups are gangs that control territory, extort businesses, kidnap people for ransom and fight for routes, and some move drugs and weapons. The largest coalition, Viv Ansanm, and the Gran Grif gang are designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations by the US.

### What is El Salvador doing in Haiti?

El Salvador has personnel in the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force. After gangs abducted four Salvadoran aviation technicians on 18 October 2026, El Salvador launched an operation to free them (Euronews, 22 October 2026). The latest media report on this page is "6 million in Haiti face severe hunger amid violence, displacement and El Niño" (Africanews, 29 Oct 2026 09:31 UTC).

### Is it safe to visit Haiti?

No. The US State Department rates Haiti "Level 4: Do not travel" because of kidnapping, crime and civil unrest, and most foreign governments give similar advice. Port-au-Prince's main airport has had long closures after gangs shot at aircraft.

### What is the Gang Suppression Force?

A multinational force authorised by UN Security Council resolution 2793 on 30 September 2025 to replace the Kenya-led mission, with up to 5,550 personnel. On 12 October 2026 it had 1,563 people on the ground; its mandate runs to 31 March 2027.

### How many people have died in Haiti's gang violence?

BINUH counted at least 5,915 people killed in Haiti in 2025, and the UN reported 1,123 killed from July to early October 2026. These counts include people killed in police operations. UCDP's figures on this page are lower because UCDP uses a narrower definition.
