## Key context

### What is normal in Turkey

Over the 30 years 1996-2025, USGS recorded 2,901 earthquakes of M4 or more in Turkey: about 97 a year, or 8.1 a month. The past 12 months had 83, close to the 30-year average. Quakes of M6 or more average 0.9 a year here (28 in 30 years), and none happened in the past 12 months.

Busy years usually mean one large quake and its aftershocks: the peak year here was 2023 with 638. Counts cover Turkey (Türkiye) and its coastal waters in the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean. They come from the USGS ComCat catalog, which records small quakes more completely in the US than elsewhere, so compare like with like.

| Magnitude | 30-year total | Average per year | Past 12 months |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| M4+ | 2,901 | 97 | 83 |
| M5+ | 261 | 8.7 | 9 |
| M6+ | 28 | 0.9 | none |
| M7+ | 6 | 0.2 | none |

### Plates and faults

Turkey sits on the Anatolian block, which is squeezed westward as the Arabian Plate pushes north into Eurasia. Anatolia slides west along two great strike-slip faults: the North Anatolian Fault, which runs about 1,500 km from eastern Turkey to the Sea of Marmara, and the East Anatolian Fault in the south-east.

The North Anatolian Fault broke in a westward sequence of large quakes from 1939 to 1999, ending with the M7.6 Izmit quake. On 6 February 2023 the East Anatolian Fault produced the M7.8 and M7.5 Kahramanmaras quakes. Western Turkey, around Izmir and the Aegean coast, is stretched north-south and has frequent normal-fault quakes.

- North Anatolian Fault (Erzincan to the Sea of Marmara)
- Marmara Sea segment south of Istanbul
- East Anatolian Fault (Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Malatya, Elazig)
- Aegean graben faults (Izmir, Manisa, Denizli)
- Bitlis-Zagros thrust (south-east Turkey)

### Where the recent quakes were

Of the 6 quakes of the past 30 days, 6 were shallow (less than 70 km deep), 0 intermediate (70-300 km) and 0 deep (more than 300 km). 6 reached M4 or more. The places USGS named most often were Feke, Turkey (6).

### What to do in an earthquake

If you feel shaking: **Drop, Cover and Hold On** until it stops. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture, and do not run outside during the shaking. On a coast, strong or long shaking is a natural tsunami warning: move to high ground or inland at once, on foot if you can. Then follow your local officials; this page is not a warning service.

In Turkey, Drop, Cover and Hold On (Çök, Kapan, Tutun), and follow AFAD and your local governor's office. After a strong quake, stay out of damaged buildings: aftershocks can bring them down.

## FAQ

### Was there an earthquake in Turkey today?

USGS listed no quake of M2.5+ in Turkey in the past 24 hours (as of 11:27 UTC). Smaller quakes may still appear on AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority).

### How many earthquakes does Turkey have per year?

From 1996 to 2025, USGS recorded about 97 quakes of M4+, about 8.7 quakes of M5+, about 0.9 quakes of M6+, about 0.2 quakes of M7+ per year in Turkey. Counting all sizes, local networks record far more, because most quakes are too small to feel.

### What was the biggest earthquake in Turkey?

The largest quake in the USGS catalog for this area since 1900 is the M7.8 20 km NNE of Erzincan, Turkey of 26 Dec 1939. The table above lists the largest 8.

### Where can I get official earthquake alerts for Turkey?

[AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority)](https://deprem.afad.gov.tr/): Turkey's official quake catalog and disaster agency. [Kandilli Observatory (KOERI, Bogazici University)](http://www.koeri.boun.edu.tr/): long-running independent quake catalog for Turkey.

### Is Istanbul at risk of a big earthquake?

Yes, the risk is high, but no one can say when. The North Anatolian Fault runs under the Sea of Marmara south of Istanbul, and its central part has not had a great quake since 1766. A M6.2 quake hit the Marmara Sea on 23 April 2025. Scientists and AFAD treat a major Marmara quake as a serious long-term hazard.

### What is the difference between AFAD and Kandilli?

Both run seismic networks in Turkey. AFAD is the government's official disaster agency; Kandilli Observatory belongs to Bogazici University. Their magnitudes for the same quake often differ slightly. USGS numbers on this page can also differ from both.

### Can earthquakes be predicted?

No. USGS states that no scientist has ever predicted a major earthquake. Scientists can only estimate the long-term probability of quakes in an area. Early-warning systems such as ShakeAlert detect a quake that has already started and warn seconds before the shaking arrives.
