## Key context

### What is normal in Indonesia

Over the 30 years 1996-2025, USGS recorded 6,536 earthquakes of M5 or more in Indonesia: about 218 a year, or 18 a month. The past 12 months had 271, about 24% more than the 30-year average. Quakes of M6 or more average 17.4 a year here (521 in 30 years), and 13 of them happened in the past 12 months.

Busy years usually mean one large quake and its aftershocks: the peak year here was 2007 with 419. Counts cover the Indonesian archipelago from Aceh to Papua and its surrounding trenches. They come from the USGS ComCat catalog, which records small quakes more completely in the US than elsewhere, so compare like with like.

| Magnitude | 30-year total | Average per year | Past 12 months |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| M5+ | 6,536 | 218 | 271 |
| M6+ | 521 | 17 | 13 |
| M7+ | 62 | 2.1 | 2 |

### Plates and faults

Indonesia sits where the Indo-Australian Plate dives beneath the Sunda Plate along the Sunda Trench, south and west of Sumatra and Java, at 5-7 cm per year. This megathrust produced the M9.1 Sumatra-Andaman quake and the Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004, and the M8.6 Nias quake three months later.

East of Bali the picture gets complicated: the Australian Plate collides with the Banda Arc, two slabs sink under the Molucca Sea, and strike-slip faults cut through Sulawesi and Papua. Indonesia has quakes at all depths, down to more than 600 km under the Banda and Flores seas.

- Sunda megathrust (west of Sumatra, south of Java)
- Great Sumatran Fault (along Sumatra's mountains)
- Flores back-arc thrust (north of Bali, Lombok and Flores)
- Palu-Koro Fault (Sulawesi, 2018 Palu quake and tsunami)
- Banda Arc and Molucca Sea (many deep quakes)
- New Guinea fold belt and faults (Papua)

### Where the recent quakes were

Of the 124 quakes of the past 30 days, 90 were shallow (less than 70 km deep), 31 intermediate (70-300 km) and 3 deep (more than 300 km). 124 reached M4 or more. The places USGS named most often were Ruteng, Indonesia (17), Tambolaka, Indonesia (12), Tobelo, Indonesia (8).

### Official sources and warnings

- [BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency)](https://www.bmkg.go.id/): Indonesia's official source for quake reports and tsunami warnings (InaTEWS); its InfoBMKG app sends alerts.
- [BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency)](https://bnpb.go.id/): national disaster response.

### What to do in an earthquake

If you feel shaking: **Drop, Cover and Hold On** until it stops. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture, and do not run outside during the shaking. On a coast, strong or long shaking is a natural tsunami warning: move to high ground or inland at once, on foot if you can. Then follow your local officials; this page is not a warning service.

In Indonesia, follow BMKG warnings. On any coast, if shaking is strong or long, or the sea pulls back, move to high ground immediately without waiting for an official warning.

## FAQ

### Was there an earthquake in Indonesia today?

Yes. USGS listed 2 quakes of M2.5+ in Indonesia in the past 24 hours (as of 11:27 UTC); the latest was a M5.7 271 km WSW of Tual, Indonesia at 22:06 UTC. Smaller quakes may only appear on BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency).

### How many earthquakes does Indonesia have per year?

From 1996 to 2025, USGS recorded about 218 quakes of M5+, about 17 quakes of M6+, about 2.1 quakes of M7+ per year in Indonesia. Counting all sizes, local networks record far more, because most quakes are too small to feel.

### What was the biggest earthquake in Indonesia?

The largest quake in the USGS catalog for this area since 1900 is the M9.1 2004 Sumatra - Andaman Islands Earthquake of 26 Dec 2004. The table above lists the largest 8.

### Where can I get official earthquake alerts for Indonesia?

[BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency)](https://www.bmkg.go.id/): Indonesia's official source for quake reports and tsunami warnings (InaTEWS); its InfoBMKG app sends alerts. [BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency)](https://bnpb.go.id/): national disaster response.

### Why does Indonesia have so many earthquakes?

It lies on the meeting point of the Indo-Australian, Sunda, Philippine Sea and Pacific plates, with long subduction zones on its southern and eastern sides. That makes it one of the most quake-prone countries on Earth, together with Japan.

### Does BMKG warn about tsunamis?

Yes. BMKG runs the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) and aims to issue a first warning within about five minutes of a strong quake. Near the source a tsunami can arrive faster than that, so strong shaking itself is the warning to move to high ground.

### Can earthquakes be predicted?

No. USGS states that no scientist has ever predicted a major earthquake. Scientists can only estimate the long-term probability of quakes in an area. Early-warning systems such as ShakeAlert detect a quake that has already started and warn seconds before the shaking arrives.
