## Key context

### What is normal in India

Over the 30 years 1996-2025, USGS recorded 3,121 earthquakes of M4.5 or more in India: about 104 a year, or 8.7 a month. The past 12 months had 40, about 62% fewer than the 30-year average. Quakes of M6 or more average 1.5 a year here (44 in 30 years), and none happened in the past 12 months.

Busy years usually mean one large quake and its aftershocks: the peak year here was 2005 with 906. Counts cover India, including the Himalayan states, north-east India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (borders approximate). They come from the USGS ComCat catalog, which records small quakes more completely in the US than elsewhere, so compare like with like.

| Magnitude | 30-year total | Average per year | Past 12 months |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| M4.5+ | 3,121 | 104 | 40 |
| M5+ | 834 | 28 | 7 |
| M6+ | 44 | 1.5 | none |
| M7+ | 5 | 0.2 | none |

### Plates and faults

Most of India's strong quakes come from the collision of the Indian Plate with Asia. India moves north at about 4-5 cm per year, and much of that is taken up on the Main Himalayan Thrust beneath the Himalaya, from Kashmir through Uttarakhand, Nepal and Sikkim to Arunachal Pradesh. North-east India is squeezed from two sides and had the great Assam quakes of 1897 and 1950.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit on a separate subduction zone, the northern end of the M9.1 rupture of December 2004. Inside the Indian Plate, quakes are rarer but can still be deadly, like Bhuj in Gujarat (M7.7, 2001) and Latur in Maharashtra (M6.2, 1993).

- Main Himalayan Thrust (Himalayan states and the Nepal border)
- Indo-Burman ranges and the Shillong plateau (north-east India)
- Andaman Trench (Andaman and Nicobar Islands)
- Kutch rift faults (Gujarat, 2001 Bhuj)
- Koyna-Warna region (Maharashtra, reservoir-related quakes)

### Where the recent quakes were

Of the 9 quakes of the past 30 days, 8 were shallow (less than 70 km deep), 1 intermediate (70-300 km) and 0 deep (more than 300 km). 9 reached M4 or more. The places USGS named most often were Bamboo Flat, India (2), Port Blair, India (2), Rāmpur, India (1).

### Official sources and warnings

- [National Center for Seismology (NCS)](https://seismo.gov.in/): India's official quake monitoring agency; it reports smaller quakes than USGS, often within minutes.
- [INCOIS Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre](https://incois.gov.in/): tsunami warnings for India's coasts and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- [National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)](https://ndma.gov.in/): preparedness guidance and emergency alerts.

### What to do in an earthquake

If you feel shaking: **Drop, Cover and Hold On** until it stops. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture, and do not run outside during the shaking. On a coast, strong or long shaking is a natural tsunami warning: move to high ground or inland at once, on foot if you can. Then follow your local officials; this page is not a warning service.

In India, Drop, Cover and Hold On, and follow NDMA and state disaster authority instructions. In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and on the east coast, move to high ground after strong or long shaking and follow INCOIS warnings.

## FAQ

### Was there an earthquake in India today?

Yes. USGS listed 1 quake of M2.5+ in India in the past 24 hours (as of 11:27 UTC); the latest was a M5.1 218 km NNW of Bamboo Flat, India at 08:49 UTC. Smaller quakes may only appear on National Center for Seismology (NCS).

### How many earthquakes does India have per year?

From 1996 to 2025, USGS recorded about 104 quakes of M4.5+, about 28 quakes of M5+, about 1.5 quakes of M6+, about 0.2 quakes of M7+ per year in India. Counting all sizes, local networks record far more, because most quakes are too small to feel.

### What was the biggest earthquake in India?

The largest quake in the USGS catalog for this area since 1900 is the M8.6 1950 Assam-Tibet Earthquake of 15 Aug 1950. The table above lists the largest 8.

### Where can I get official earthquake alerts for India?

[National Center for Seismology (NCS)](https://seismo.gov.in/): India's official quake monitoring agency; it reports smaller quakes than USGS, often within minutes. [INCOIS Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre](https://incois.gov.in/): tsunami warnings for India's coasts and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. [National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)](https://ndma.gov.in/): preparedness guidance and emergency alerts.

### Which parts of India have the most earthquakes?

The Himalayan belt from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh, north-east India, the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have the highest hazard on India's official seismic zoning map. Delhi is in a high zone as well, because of its distance to the Himalaya and its soft soils.

### Why does USGS list fewer Indian quakes than NCS?

NCS runs a dense national network and reports quakes down to about M2-3 across India. USGS lists quakes outside the US mainly from about M4-4.5, so small Indian quakes appear on NCS first and may never appear on USGS. Use NCS for local small quakes.

### Can earthquakes be predicted?

No. USGS states that no scientist has ever predicted a major earthquake. Scientists can only estimate the long-term probability of quakes in an area. Early-warning systems such as ShakeAlert detect a quake that has already started and warn seconds before the shaking arrives.
