USGS recorded **208 earthquakes** worldwide in the past 24 hours: 45 of magnitude 2.5 or more and 29 of M4.5 or more. The strongest was a **M6.4** southeast of Easter Island at 07:49 UTC.

## Earthquake right now: the last hour

USGS listed 5 earthquakes of any size worldwide in the past hour (as of 09:37 UTC). Most small ones are in the US, where the networks are densest.

## Key context

### How to read this page

Each dot is one earthquake from the USGS real-time feed. The colour and size follow the magnitude: **LOW** is M2.5 to M4.9, **MED** is M5.0 to M5.9, **HIGH** is M6.0 to M6.9 and **CRIT** is M7.0 or a red USGS PAGER alert. The label is always in text, so the colours are never the only signal.

Magnitude is logarithmic. A M6.0 releases about 32 times more energy than a M5.0, and about 1,000 times more than a M4.0. Depth matters too: a shallow M6 under a city usually does more damage than a deep M7 far offshore.

### What the tsunami flag means

USGS sets a tsunami flag on large quakes in oceanic regions. **The flag is not a tsunami warning.** Real warnings come from the tsunami warning centers, listed at [tsunami.gov](https://www.tsunami.gov/), and from your national authority. No quake in the past 24 hours carried the flag.

### Why counts change during the day

USGS reviews automatic solutions. A quake can first appear with one magnitude and be revised a few minutes later, and duplicates from different networks are merged. The numbers on this page are rebuilt every 10 minutes from the feed, so they can differ slightly from the USGS map at any given second.

## FAQ

### Was there an earthquake near me?

Tap the map above: every M2.5+ quake of the past 24 hours is on it, with time, depth and magnitude. Small local quakes (under about M2.5 in the US, under M4.5 elsewhere) may only appear on your national seismic network. For alerts within a radius of your own location, the MonitorWorld app sends a push alert when a quake hits near you. You can also use [Earthquake near me](https://monitorworld.app/live/earthquake-near-me) to sort recent quakes by distance from you, on your device.

### Was there just an earthquake?

The most recent M2.5+ earthquake in the USGS feed was a M5.1 218 km NNW of Bamboo Flat, India at 08:49 UTC (56m ago when this page was built). Small local quakes can take 5 to 20 minutes to appear, and quakes outside the US below about M4.5 are often listed late or not at all.

### Where were the earthquakes today?

In the past 24 hours the M2.5+ quakes were spread over 25 regions. The strongest M4.5+ events this week were M7.0 191 km ENE of Nagqu, China; M6.9 197 km WNW of Port-Olry, Vanuatu; M6.5 Bonin Islands, Japan region.

### Why did I feel an earthquake that is not shown here?

This page lists magnitude 2.5 and larger. Many felt quakes are smaller, and quakes outside the United States are usually only reported by USGS from about M4.5. Local networks (for example EMSC, JMA or your national survey) often publish small events faster. You can also report what you felt to USGS "Did You Feel It?".

### Can earthquakes be predicted?

No. USGS states that no scientist has ever predicted a major earthquake, and it does not expect to be able to in the foreseeable future. What scientists can do is estimate the probability of quakes in an area over years and issue aftershock forecasts after a large event. Early-warning systems such as ShakeAlert detect a quake that has already started and warn seconds before shaking arrives.
