## Key context

### E-4B Nightwatch vs E-6B Mercury

| | E-4B Nightwatch | E-6B Mercury |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Service | US Air Force | US Navy |
| Airframe | Boeing 747-200 | Boeing 707-320 |
| Fleet | 4 | 16 |
| Main base | Offutt AFB, Nebraska | Tinker AFB, Oklahoma |
| Mission | National Airborne Operations Center | TACAMO + Airborne Command Post |
| Replacement | SAOC (Sierra Nevada Corp.) | E-130J |

### How to read a sighting

A single E-6B over the central US or the Pacific is normal: the fleet keeps aircraft on alert and flies long relay orbits. E-4B flights from Offutt are often training sorties or legs of a Secretary of Defense trip. Unusual signs would be several aircraft airborne at once, flights from unusual bases, or flights that coincide with a declared crisis.

Sightings on this page come from public ADS-B data and are at least 20 minutes old. When an aircraft does not broadcast a position, it does not appear at all, so "no sighting" does not mean "on the ground".

### Why people call it the doomsday plane

The nickname comes from the Cold War role: if a nuclear attack destroyed command centres on the ground, these aircraft would keep the chain of command and the link to US nuclear forces working. That role still exists, which is why flights get attention on social media. In practice almost all flights are routine.

## FAQ

### Is the doomsday plane in the air right now?

Not in our latest delayed snapshot (09:09 UTC). These aircraft often fly without a public position, so a blank tracker does not prove that none is airborne.

### What does it mean when the doomsday plane flies?

Usually very little. The E-4B and E-6B fly most days for training, crew proficiency, communication relays and, for the E-4B, to carry the US Secretary of Defense on foreign trips. A flight becomes newsworthy only with other signals, such as several aircraft airborne at once, unusual orbits or official statements. A single sighting on a tracker is not a warning.

### What is the doomsday plane used for?

The name covers two US aircraft. The Air Force E-4B Nightwatch is the National Airborne Operations Center: a flying command post for the President, Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs if ground centres are destroyed. The Navy E-6B Mercury runs TACAMO, a radio link to ballistic-missile submarines, and the Airborne Command Post ("Looking Glass") mission that can relay launch orders to missile forces.

### How many doomsday planes are there?

Four E-4B Nightwatch aircraft, based at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, and 16 E-6B Mercury aircraft, based mainly at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma. The Air Force plans to replace the E-4B with the Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC), and the Navy plans to replace the E-6B with the E-130J.

### How long can the doomsday plane stay airborne?

Without refuelling an E-4B flies for roughly 12 hours. With aerial refuelling it was designed to stay up for days, limited mainly by engine oil and crew rest. The E-6B can also refuel in the air and flies long orbits over the US and the oceans.

### Why is the doomsday plane flying today?

In our latest snapshot none was broadcasting a position. The Pentagon rarely explains individual flights. Most are scheduled training or support missions. Check the media reports on this page and official Department of Defense statements before you draw conclusions.
