# DEFCON Level Today: Is It Public? Live Signals

Updated 10:04 UTC, 29 Oct 2026. Canonical: https://monitorworld.app/live/defcon-level

**The current DEFCON level is not public**: the US military does not publish it, and any website that shows a number is guessing. What we can show are real, public signals: our global risk index (56/100, medium, trend stable), 0 "doomsday" aircraft in our latest delayed snapshot, and 3 nuclear or missile-related news reports in the past 48 hours.

## Key numbers

- Current DEFCON level: **Not public** (classified by the US military)
- Global risk index (our model): **56/100** (medium, trend stable)
- E-4B / E-6B airborne (delayed): **0**
- Nuclear or missile reports, 48 h: **3**

## Key context

### The five DEFCON levels

| Level | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| DEFCON 5 | Lowest readiness: normal peacetime |
| DEFCON 4 | Increased intelligence watch and stronger security |
| DEFCON 3 | Increased force readiness above normal; air force ready in 15 minutes |
| DEFCON 2 | Further increase: forces ready to deploy and engage in under 6 hours |
| DEFCON 1 | Maximum readiness: nuclear war imminent or begun |

### Why there is no live DEFCON tracker

DEFCON (defense readiness condition) is an internal US military alert posture. It is set by command, can differ between regional commands, and is classified while it applies. Historians know about past changes from declassified records. Sites that show a "current DEFCON" are private estimates based on news, and are not linked to the Pentagon.

If you want to watch for real escalation, look at things that are public: unusual doomsday-plane activity, strategic bomber and tanker movements, missile tests, official statements, and the risk score on this site.

## FAQ

### What DEFCON level are we at right now?

Nobody outside the US military can tell you: the current DEFCON level is classified and not published. Websites that show a number are making their own estimate. Historically the US has spent most of the time at DEFCON 5 or 4.

### Has the US ever been at DEFCON 1?

Not as far as the public record shows. The highest confirmed level is DEFCON 2, set for Strategic Air Command during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. US forces went to DEFCON 3 during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and on 11 September 2001.

### What does DEFCON 2 mean?

DEFCON 2 is the step below maximum readiness: forces ready to deploy and engage in less than six hours. It has only been confirmed once, in 1962.

### Who decides the DEFCON level?

The President and the Secretary of Defense, advised by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Different commands can be at different levels at the same time.

### Is DEFCON 5 the most dangerous level?

No, it is the opposite. DEFCON 5 is normal peacetime readiness, and DEFCON 1 is maximum readiness, used only if nuclear war is imminent.
